“Near the Belgrade Gate of the Niš Fortress, the performance On the Difficulty of Telling the Truth was presented—an extremely precise, clean, and impressive work based on the political-literary essay by Bertolt Brecht, written in the 1930s when Hitler rose to power in Germany and Brecht went into exile in France.

The show was conceived and created by the artistic team from Ravenna, composed of director Davide Sacco and actress and playwright Agata Tomšič, the core of the independent company ErosAntEros, founded on the conviction that theatre should change the world and resist social degenerations such as fascism. The actress, protagonist of this performance packed with crucial meanings for our present, delivers Brecht’s text in a dreamlike, poetic, and solemn manner, accompanying it with slowed and contracted body movements—an expressiveness recalling the work of director Eugenio Barba. Her performance, which the Serbian audience had already appreciated at the latest edition of Joakimfest in Kragujevac, appeared even more evocative here thanks to the depth and atmospheric quality of the outdoor space. The intense, highly evocative electronic music composed and performed live by Sacco delicately accompanies Agata Tomšič’s actions; simultaneously, the projections of Michele Lapini’s sharp photographs—documenting social misery, protests, and the ecological and political issues of the contemporary world—clearly transpose the message of Brecht’s essay into our era, globally shaken by new fascisms and ruthless persecutions against the truth.”
