Interview by Gian Paolo Polesini with Agata Tomšič, “Il Nord Est”, August 9 2026

Agata Tomšič at the helm of Mittelfest: I bring a European vision between Istrian roots and a punk spirit, “Il Nord Est”, August 9, 2026

For years we have been hearing a somber de profundis on the health of theater. Yet audiences have returned to pack the auditoriums. How do you explain this?
To me, theater is the exact opposite: it is the reason I wake up every morning. Of course, today it no longer holds the central role it had centuries ago due to social and technological changes. Yet, amidst the frenzy of contemporary life, the stage remains a unique space where people choose to come together, share moments, and reflect on themselves and the world. It is an experience no other form of communication can offer. Even when a show proves divisive, the audience engages in debate and dialogue, sparking a positive vortex of ideas.

Your path is rather unconventional.
Yes. I don’t have a diploma from a traditional drama academy. I forged my language by working directly in the field, taking an approach I would describe as somewhat punk. This allowed me to discover my own personal voice.

European dialogue defined the early editions of Mittelfest and was the very core of its foundation. In such a complex historical moment, is that role still relevant?
I’ve been asking myself that ever since I submitted my application. The historical context in which the festival was founded was unique, but that doesn’t mean it cannot continue to serve as an observatory on Europe today. I would like to pursue this both through the artistic programming and by organizing meetings and debates that bring together artists, journalists, political science scholars, and other experts. The goal is to reflect on contemporary Europe, its values, and the role the continent plays in the international geopolitical landscape.
