Interview by Nico Nanni with Agata Tomšič, “Il Gazzettino”, July 30 2026

Agata Tomšič at Mittelfest: I’m here to learn, “Il Gazzettino”, July 30 2026

The physical border no longer exists, but perhaps some mental or cultural barriers remain: do you believe Mittelfest can help overcome this fear?
Most certainly. I have had similar experiences in my own work, precisely to keep building positive relationships. Mittelfest has always had a very close relationship with Slovenia… I did not apply for the directorship to create an Italian-Slovenian festival: I am interested in the Central European dimension and in all the countries with which the festival has had and continues to have ties. Mitteleuropa was a virtuous example of coexistence among different peoples and cultures: I hope, therefore, that this dimension remains relevant and can be passed on today.

You have followed Mittelfest: it may be early to say, but have you already formed an idea for the future?
I came here to get to know the area better, its inhabitants, and the organization. I am still here at the festival headquarters for meetings with the team, to connect with the cultural, economic, and community organizations of Cividale and the surrounding region, and to engage in dialogue with everyone. This does not mean I want to create a regional festival; rather, it means seeking dialogue, studying new strategies, and reaching new audiences—also through training and participation programs—and perhaps finding new ways to bring the public closer to contemporary arts, bridging the gap that often forms between art and audiences. All while maintaining, of course, the festival’s high standard of quality and international reach.
